HERE ARE THE STATS...

01.

THE NUMBERS

  • More than 23,000 teens will age out of foster care each year
  • More than 40% of those who age out were in the system for more than 3 years
  • Kids who enter the foster care system after age 12 have a 2 in 5 chance of being legally emancipated (age out) at the age of 18 from the system

02.

THEIR FUTURE

  • 20% of those who age out of the system will be instantly homeless
  • Only 1 out of every 2 foster kids who age out will have some form of gainful employment by age 24
  • Less than a 3% chance for teens who age out of foster care to earn a college degree in their lifetime
  • 75% of women & 33% of men receive government benefits to meet basic needs after aging out

THEIR HEALTH

  • 7 out of 10 girls who age out will become pregnant before age 21
  • 25% of teens who age out will suffer from the direct effects of PTSD
  • 1 out of every 2 teens who age out will develop a substance dependence

TEACHER'S PERSPECTIVE

  • More than 9 in 10 teachers agree that teaching social & emotional skills will probably or definitely improve relationships & reduce bullying
  • An overwhelming majority believe a larger focus on SEL & after-school programs will have positive effects on students' attendance & graduation, college prep, workforce readiness, & overall success

THE RESEARCH SHOWS

  • Studies have found that benefits associated with students participating in afterschool programs include:
  • Decrease in criminal activity & risky behavior
  • Awareness of the dangers of risky behavior
  • Decrease in aggression & other problematic behaviors
  • Improved social skills
  • Improved confidence
  • Feeling safe
  • High-quality afterschool programs improve students' educational outcomes, school attendance, and social & emotional learning
  • Consistent participation in afterschool programs has shown lower dropout rates and has helped close achievement gaps for low-income students
